MACS, or Magnetic-Activated Cell Sorting, is a cutting-edge technique that enables the selection of the most promising spermatozoa for use in Assisted Reproduction Treatments.

Every spermatozoon has a finite lifespan and undergoes a natural process called Apoptosis, leading to its demise. When an oocyte is fertilized by apoptotic spermatozoa, it significantly increases the likelihood of abnormal embryo development or even halts embryonic growth altogether. Such pregnancies often result in early miscarriages.

The MACS method introduces a solution by allowing us to identify and label apoptotic spermatozoa. These labeled spermatozoa are then passed through a separation column placed within a magnetic field. Apoptotic spermatozoa are effectively retained within the separation column.


On the other hand, living spermatozoa displaying no signs of apoptosis seamlessly pass through the magnetic field column and are collected for future use. These "healthy" sperm can be harnessed for various infertility treatment methods, including Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).

The embryos resulting from the utilization of these purified spermatozoa exhibit a significantly improved chance of normal development. The MACS technique can be applied to a wide range of patients but is particularly beneficial for:

  • Patients undergoing artificial insemination.
  • Infertile patients characterized by a high level of DNA fragmentation in their spermatozoa.

  • Patients who have previously undergone at least one treatment cycle or are grappling with poor embryo quality that cannot be attributed to the oocyte.
